South End Buttery Goodness

People may gather in the North End for 24-hour bakeries and cannolis, but for a cozy escape from the tourist crowds and traffic, head to the South End Buttery.

Tucked away in the residential neighborhoods of Boston’s South End, this café is famous for its cupcakes. Three of which are named after the owners’ dogs, The Madison, The Harriet and The Simon, the café also makes sure to go all out on special occasions. In honor of Michael Jackson’s passing, for example, the bakery came up with Billie Jean is Not My Lover Cupcakes (chocolate with vanilla icing). For those worried about indulging a little too much, all the food is prepared with local, seasonal organic ingredients and contains no trans fats.

The real appeal doesn’t lie in the award-winning treats, though, but in the charm of the décor. Located in America’s largest district of Victorian brick row houses, the Buttery balances modern design with a homey feel. The white and dark wood interiors are reminiscent of a small Parisian café, minus the cigarette smoke but with the smell of cinnamon. The display case with baked goods is tempting, but it’s difficult not to get comfortable next to one of the big windows and enjoy the view of the street for a little people watching.

Next time you’re strolling down Tremont Street, follow the red brick pavement to this little nook to escape the heat and unwind. The atmosphere invites you to bring a book and read for hours, or to bring a friend and catch up.

South End Buttery 314 Shawmut Avenue Boston, MA    617 482 1015    Cafe hours 6:30 am – 8 pm daily
